Gamma‐ray Astrophysics in the multi-messenger era and in the context of CTA

Dott. Ulisses Barres de Almeida

(Brazilian Center for Physics Research)

Multi‐messenger astrophysics is at the center of modern astrophysics research, and it is safe to say that ground-based gamma-ray astronomy is at its core, bridging in a unique way astro-particle physics and high-energy astrophysics. In this scenario, CTA stands out as the main future facility for VHE gamma-ray astronomy, with unprecedented capabilities, a unique all-sky coverage, and the singular advantage of being the first open observatory ever built in the energy range above 100 GeV. In this seminar I will briefly introduce the status and scientific / instrumental context of multi-messenger astrophysics and present in detail how CTA fits into it, describing the activities currently ongoing within the Consortium and the CTA Observatory in preparation for future multi-wavelength and multi-messenger science coordination. I will conclude by saying some words about the prospects and the future role to be played by wide-field gamma-ray instruments, the last missing piece in the global network of multi-messenger astrophysics, recently provided by LHAASO, and to be further expanded by the proposed SWGO in the Southern Hemisphere.
