"Some aspects of symmetry descent"

SymTFTs allow us to encode the symmetry structure of Quantum Field Theories in a convenient way. For those QFTs that arise in geometric engineering, or holography, we expect to be able to derive the SymTFT from the geometric data of the string background. This talk will describe some recent progress in this direction, together with S. Hosseini and with F. Gagliano.

Over the past few years, generalized symmetries mixing 0-form and 1-form symmetries in structures more general than (higher) groups have been found in a wide variety of four-dimensional field theories. I will review these structures and explain some consequences of such so-called “non-invertible” symmetries on RG flows. In particular, for these generalized symmetries there are networks of topological interfaces that extend the usual group multiplication. The matching of such higher structure topological field theories across energy scales gives stringent constraints that can be used to establish dictionaries between the IR and the UV.
