Technological Research and Development

Work in the new technologies in the Physics Department is focused on techniques for particle detection, on developments in the field of energy production, and on the development and application of new imaging techniques. In the first case, frontier research is ongoing into two aspects of particle detection: the high-efficiency sensing of high-rate events, vital for applications at modern accelerators, and the low-background detection of rare events stemming from very small cross-section processes. As regards energy production, the work consists of developing new cheaper materials for the production of solar cells. The imaging projects are moslty applied to the developments of high-resolution and high-contrast X-ray imaging and tomography methods.
