I will give an overview of the multiple SZ effects and highlight some of the recent spatially and spectrally resolved measurements. The SZ effects give a complementary view of warm & hot ionised gas traditionally probed in X-ray observations. I will summarise the main instruments for targeted/pointed SZ observations, and motivate what is necessary for the next generation — a large aperture single dish with an enormous field of view.
