A new hadron therapy centre (MedAustron) for proton and carbon ion cancer treatment is near completion in Austria. In this talk an overview of this centre and the main parameters is given. There is the demand for advanced detector systems, which are related to hadron therapy and medical physics. Selected topics in this challenging research field will be presented and discussed.
