Knowledge Transfer

Plan for Scientific Degrees

The plan for scientific degrees is a work project involving high school students, as a result of a collaboration between the Ministry of Education, University and Research, Confindustria, and the National Conference of Deans of Science and Technology Faculties.

The objectives include the dissemination of scientific culture, encouraging young people to pursue studies in scientific subjects, and improving orientation opportunities through initiatives that offer the chance to experience first-hand what it means to 'do science.'

Professor Maria Peressi is the project coordinator for the Department of Physics.

Physics Masterclasses

Every year, the Department of Physics hosts the International Masterclasses, which are organised by the Trieste Section of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics. Masterclasses are an educational event, first proposed in 2005 during the World Year of Physics.

Throughout Europe, students with a particular interest in physics are hosted for a day by universities and research institutions participating in the initiative. They have the opportunity to attend lectures on Elementary Particle Physics, delivered by researchers and scientists actively engaged in the field, and to engage in computer exercises analysing data from cutting-edge experiments.

Educational Trips

The Physics Department annually co-sponsors study trips organized by the Trieste section of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics to some of the most important research centres for elementary particles: CERN, Gran Sasso National Laboratory, Laboratory of Legnaro (PD). On these occasions, undergraduate physics students can enter the laboratories and have direct contact with the researchers at these centres of excellence.

Educational Seminars

Upon request, schools can contact us to organise seminars at their premises with our teachers and researchers who are experts in the school's areas of interest (contact orientamento.df@units.it).

The research activity in Trieste covers various fields of physics. To showcase the level of excellence in physics research and technological applications in our region to high school students, Physics degree professors visit schools for brief seminars, lasting one or two hours, to present their activities. Alternatively, they receive visiting students organised in groups and accompany them to familiarise themselves with the study and research facilities in the Trieste area that collaborate with the Department of Physics, following organised routes.

During these meetings, which are agreed upon with the interested teachers, a significant portion of the time is dedicated to answering questions and satisfying the curiosity of the students.
