From the work of early Greek thinkers, to Galileo, to Darwin, scientific progress has been the province of individuals. As problems became more complex it became not longer possible for an individual to make progress. Nearly a century ago the invention of the cyclotron by Earnest Lawrence posed a problem that required a team of people with different skills. This talk will describe how what we now call Big Science, inspired by Lawrence, has changed the way we solve Big Problems facing mankind from understanding the universe, elucidating the building blocks of life to creating a clean energy future.
