Technological Research and Development

Work in the new technologies in the Physics Department is focused on techniques for particle detection, and on developments in the field of energy production. In the former case, frontier research is ongoing into two aspects of particle detection: the high-efficiency sensing of high-rate events, vital for applications at modern accelerators, and the low-background detection of rare events stemming from very small cross-section processes. As regards energy production, the work consists of developing new cheaper materials for the production of solar cells.
